  2.                   STATUS REPORT ON THE VENDINFO PROJECT

  5.  Brief Project Description
  6.  
  7.    VENDINFO is a system for conveying software product information
  8.    and distribution permissions from the author to distributors.
  9.    A standard (public) file format will carry extensive information
  10.    in a compressed, efficient form.  The associated toolset will aid
  11.    the author in constructing the record, and will allow the
  12.    distributor to extract portions of the record, or to make
  13.    distribution decisions based on its content, in a highly auto-
  14.    mated way. VENDINFO will allow automation of many operations now
  15.    performed manually by BBS Sysops, disk vendors, etc.

  17.  VENDINFO Project Status and Plans

  19.    On 8/31/93, a minor revision of the VENDINFO file-format
  20.    standard (alpha-test version 0.90) was released for study and
  21.    comment.  As development of the toolset has progressed, a number
  22.    of minor errors were found.  There was also a substantive change
  23.    in the "Required Hardware/Software Platform" area, and a small
  24.    number of minor adjustments.  Such changes will probably continue
  25.    at least through the alpha-test period.

  27.    Tools development has been slightly slower than projected, but
  28.    we still hope to start the tools alpha-test in September (this
  29.    should be the final test phase for the standard itself).
  30.    The basic tools involved in this testing will be the VendEdit
  31.    editor, the VendPrcs processor, and the software developer's
  32.    library.

  34.    Upon completion of this toolset, work will begin on the (free)
  35.    VendView viewer for end-users, and the Product Registry will be
  36.    opened.

  38.  Availability of Concept Paper and Draft File-Format Standard
  39.  
  40.    A package containing the VENDINFO Concept Paper and the draft
  41.    file-format standard can be obtained from the SHAREWARE forum on
  42.    CompuServe (lib 0, VNDINF.ZIP); the UKSHARE forum on CompuServe
  43.    (lib 11, VNDINF.ZIP); by download or FidoNet/RIME file
  44.    request (as VENDINFO.ZIP) from the Rams' Island Software BBS
  45.    (see below); or from various other sources.  If absolutely
  46.    necessary, hardcopies are available for mailing within the
  47.    United States upon receipt of $3.00 U.S. and a mailing label.
  48.    A complete set of VENDINFO information, including some material
  49.    not available electronically, can be obtained for $5.00 U.S.
  50.    and a mailing label.

  52.  Trade Groups Which Have Endorsed VENDINFO

  54.    The following shareware trade groups have formally endorsed the
  55.    VENDINFO file-format standard as a means of conveying product
  56.    and product-distribution information from authors to users and
  57.    distributors.

  59.       Shareware Trade Association and Resources (STAR)

  61.  Products Now "Committed in Principle" to Support VENDINFO
  62.  
  63.    The following software manufacturers are "committed in principle"
  64.    to "support" the VENDINFO standard.  That is, subject to our
  65.    development of a satisfactory standard and software developer's
  66.    library, these manufacturers agree to extract relevant product
  67.    description information directly from the VENDINFO record, much
  68.    like today's use of FILE_ID.DIZ.  They have not been asked to
  69.    make any direct use of the distribution policy information in the
  70.    VENDINFO record.  That is the function of a separate tool,
  71.    optionally available to the Sysop.
